**Hyderabad, January 26, 2025** – A fireworks display following the “Bharat Mata Maha Aarti” at Hussainsagar lake in Hyderabad resulted in a fire accident on Republic Day, injuring five people. The incident occurred late Sunday night after the main event, which was attended by Union Minister Kishan Reddy, Governor Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan, and other dignitaries.
The fireworks were being set off from two boats belonging to the Tourism Department when a fire broke out. Initial reports suggest that sparks ignited nearby fireworks, quickly spreading to engulf both vessels. Five individuals, including a fireworks expert, were injured. One, identified as Ganapathy (22), sustained critical injuries and is in a serious condition. The others – Chintha Krishna (47), a B.Tech student Sai Chand from Karimnagar, and BJP workers Sunil and Praneeth – received minor injuries and are receiving treatment at various hospitals.
Fifteen BJP workers were aboard the boats along with the drivers, other crew, and the fireworks experts. Several individuals jumped into the lake to escape the flames. Authorities faced challenges in extinguishing the fire due to a lack of appropriate equipment at the jetty, requiring the use of speedboats for rescue operations.
The incident has raised serious concerns about safety protocols during such events. The damaged boats, valued at approximately ₹12 lakhs (according to Tourism Department officials), are likely to be thoroughly investigated as part of the inquiry into this mishap.
