Mon Jan 27 05:09:03 IST 2025: ## Gaza Ceasefire: Hostage Release and Palestinian Return to North Gaza Secured
**Cairo, Egypt –** A major breakthrough in the fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas has been achieved, with an agreement reached to release an Israeli civilian hostage and allow Palestinians to return to northern Gaza. The announcement was made early Monday by Qatar, a key mediator in the ongoing talks.
Under the agreement, Hamas will release Israeli civilian Arbel Yehoud, along with two other hostages, before Friday. In return, Israel will allow Palestinians to begin returning to northern Gaza on Monday morning at 7 a.m. This follows a delay caused by Israel’s insistence on Yehoud’s immediate release, which led to accusations of ceasefire violations by Hamas. The release of these hostages is in addition to three more scheduled for release next Saturday. Hamas has also provided Israel with a list of information regarding all hostages held, a move confirmed by the Israeli Prime Minister’s office.
Despite the agreement, the situation remains tense. Israeli forces fired on crowds of Palestinians waiting to return to northern Gaza on Sunday, killing two and wounding nine. Israel claims the shots were warning shots fired at those posing a threat. This incident follows Israel’s withdrawal from several areas of Gaza under the ceasefire.
The announcement comes amidst controversial comments from U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting the resettlement of most of Gaza’s population. This proposal, rejected by Egypt, Jordan, and the Palestinians, has been met with strong opposition, with Hamas officials stating that Palestinians will rebuild Gaza themselves if the Israeli blockade is lifted.
The current ceasefire, initiated last Sunday, aims to end the 15-month conflict triggered by Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attack. The first phase, lasting until early March, includes the release of 33 hostages and nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. The future of the second phase, and the release of remaining hostages, remains uncertain, with both sides holding strong, opposing positions. The war has resulted in a devastating humanitarian crisis, with tens of thousands of Palestinians killed and the vast majority of Gaza’s population displaced.
