Mon Jan 27 05:50:12 UTC 2025: **Maharashtra Reports Surge in Suspected Guillain-Barré Syndrome Cases; One Death Confirmed**

PUNE, MAHARASHTRA – January 27, 2025 – Maharashtra is grappling with a cluster of suspected Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases, with health officials reporting 101 cases to date and one death in Solapur. The majority of cases (81) are concentrated in Pune, with additional cases reported in Pimpri Chinchwad and other districts.

On January 26th alone, 19 new suspected GBS cases emerged, prompting a state-level rapid response team to investigate. Symptoms include sudden weakness in the limbs, difficulty walking, and prolonged diarrhea. Authorities have launched extensive house-to-house surveillance, surveying over 25,000 homes in affected areas.

While acknowledging the increase in cases, health officials stressed that GBS is not contagious and is typically triggered by bacterial or viral infections. Dr. Nina Borade, chief of the Pune civic health department, emphasized that most patients recover fully with supportive care such as antibiotics and IV fluids. She also stated that GBS does not constitute an epidemic or pandemic.

Dr. Borade highlighted the importance of maintaining good hygiene practices, including consuming clean, boiled water and properly storing food to prevent infections that can potentially trigger GBS. The authorities are urging citizens not to panic and to seek medical attention at government hospitals if they experience any GBS symptoms. They have also instructed local authorities to increase surveillance activities.
