Mon Jan 27 13:33:44 IST 2025: ## Pune Guillain-Barré Syndrome Outbreak Claims First Life

**PUNE, MAHARASHTRA –** Maharashtra has reported its first death linked to the Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) outbreak currently affecting Pune. The victim, a resident of Solapur, reportedly succumbed to the neurological disorder after exhibiting symptoms consistent with GBS. While the individual likely contracted the illness in Pune, health officials are investigating the exact circumstances.

As of January 27th, 2025, Maharashtra has recorded 101 confirmed GBS cases, with the majority (81) centered in Pune. Pimpri Chinchwad has reported 14 cases, and the remaining six are spread across other districts. Sixteen GBS patients in Pune are currently on ventilator support.

The outbreak has prompted a swift response from authorities. Rapid response teams (RRTs) and the Pune Municipal Corporation’s health department are actively surveying the affected areas, specifically focusing on the Singhgad Road region. To date, over 25,578 homes have been surveyed.

Guillain-Barré syndrome is a rare autoimmune disorder where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the nervous system. This can lead to muscle weakness, numbness, and potentially paralysis. While the exact cause remains under investigation, the National Institute of Virology (NIV) has identified norovirus and Campylobacter jejuni bacteria in some samples, both known to cause gastrointestinal symptoms. Many GBS patients in Pune reported similar symptoms prior to the onset of neurological issues. Doctors emphasize that while most patients recover fully, GBS can be life-threatening in severe cases. There is currently no permanent cure.
