Mon Jan 27 00:50:50 UTC 2025: **Nine Medical Professionals Awarded Prestigious Padma Awards**

NEW DELHI— Nine individuals have been recognized for their outstanding contributions to medicine, receiving prestigious Padma Awards, India’s highest civilian honors. The awards, announced on Republic Day, are presented in three categories: Padma Vibhushan (for exceptional service), Padma Bhushan (for distinguished service), and Padma Shri (for distinguished service in any field).

Among the nine medical awardees, Duvvur Nageshwar Reddy and Jose Chacko Periappuram received the Padma Vibhushan and Padma Bhushan, respectively. Others receiving the Padma Shri include Ashok Kumar Mahapatra, Budhendra Kumar Jain, Sheikha Shaikha Ali Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Vijayalakshmi Deshamane, Dr. Chetan Chitnis, and Prof. Pankaj Patel (also recognized for work in life sciences).

A total of 139 Padma Awards were conferred this year, including 7 Padma Vibhushan, 19 Padma Bhushan, and 113 Padma Shri awards. The recipients represent various fields and include 23 women, 10 foreigners/NRIs/PIOs/OCIs, and 13 posthumous awards. The awards will be presented by the President of India at a ceremony in Rashtrapati Bhawan around March/April.
