Sun Jan 26 23:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Former Super Bowl Champion Calvin Jones Dies at 54
**Omaha, NE** – Calvin Jones, a former Green Bay Packers running back and member of their Super Bowl XXXI championship team, has died at the age of 54. While authorities are awaiting autopsy results to confirm the cause of death, Omaha police believe carbon monoxide poisoning may have been a factor.
Emergency responders were called to Jones’ home on January 22nd at approximately 8:30 p.m. following a report of a gas odor. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered Jones deceased in the basement. Police reported that a malfunctioning furnace prompted Jones to use a generator, potentially leading to the fatal carbon monoxide buildup.
A standout football player throughout his life, Jones achieved All-American honors in high school in Omaha before a successful collegiate career at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he rushed for 3,166 yards and 40 touchdowns. Drafted by the Oakland Raiders in 1994, he played two seasons in the NFL before joining the Green Bay Packers in 1996. Although he only appeared in one game that season, he was part of the team that won Super Bowl XXXI.
In a 2015 interview upon his induction into the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame, Jones attributed his success to the love and support of his maternal grandparents who raised him. He is remembered for his remarkable athletic achievements and the enduring impact he made on the lives of those around him.
