ERODE, Tamil Nadu – Housing and Urban Development Minister S. Muthusamy has predicted a resounding victory for the DMK-led INDIA bloc candidate, V.C. Chandhirakumar, in the upcoming Erode (East) Assembly by-election on February 5th. He anticipates a winning margin exceeding 1.20 lakh votes.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Minister Muthusamy explained the INDIA bloc’s decision to conduct a largely grassroots campaign, emphasizing direct engagement with voters. He highlighted the success of the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thittam, a scheme providing monthly financial assistance to 1.16 crore women, promising to include those currently excluded.
When questioned about Water Resources Minister Duraimurugan’s comments regarding a potential AIADMK-DMK merger if MGR were still alive, Minister Muthusamy declined to elaborate, citing the sensitive election period. He also addressed the limited ministerial presence in the campaign, stating that a large ministerial contingent could invite scrutiny, while a smaller presence risks drawing criticism as well. The decision, he clarified, was to prioritize local leadership in the campaign.
Finally, Minister Muthusamy dismissed criticism from NTK leader Seeman concerning Dravidar Kazhagam founder Periyar E V Ramasamy, stating that Periyar’s legacy is widely known and understood.
