**Mumbai, India** – A Mumbai-based association of medical professionals has accused insurance provider Niva Bupa of preferential treatment after it swiftly approved a nearly ₹36 lakh (approximately $436,000 USD) medical claim for actor Saif Ali Khan following a knife attack at his home.
The Association of Medical Consultants (AMC), representing over 14,000 medical practitioners, has written to the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) expressing concern over the rapid approval of ₹25 lakh (approximately $303,000 USD) in cashless treatment for Khan’s five-day hospital stay. The claim was initially publicized via social media, sparking the AMC’s complaint.
The AMC alleges this incident highlights a broader issue of celebrities and high-profile individuals receiving favorable treatment and higher cashless limits than ordinary citizens, who often face inadequate coverage and low reimbursement rates. They argue this creates an unfair, two-tiered system and demands greater transparency in insurance claim processing and cashless treatment limits.
The letter to IRDAI requests a full investigation into Niva Bupa’s handling of Khan’s claim and calls for the implementation of guidelines to prevent such preferential treatment. The AMC emphasizes that insurance should be a safeguard for all, regardless of social standing.
Khan was hospitalized at Lilavati Hospital on January 16th after sustaining six stab wounds during a home invasion. Doctors reported that one wound narrowly missed his spinal cord. He underwent surgery and was discharged last week.
