Mon Jan 27 20:01:53 IST 2025: ## Hobart Hurricanes Clinch Maiden Big Bash Title with Record-Breaking Win
**Hobart, Australia:** The Hobart Hurricanes have finally claimed their first Big Bash League (BBL) title after a dominant seven-wicket victory over the Sydney Thunder in Monday’s final at Hobart. Mitchell Owen’s record-equalling century, the joint-fastest in BBL history, powered the Hurricanes to victory.
Owen smashed a breathtaking 108 off just 42 balls, including six fours and eleven sixes, finishing the season as the tournament’s top run-scorer with 452 runs. His explosive innings, which included the fastest BBL fifty (16 balls), completely overturned the Thunder’s strong start.
Sydney, winning the toss and electing to bat first, initially looked promising with a 97-run opening partnership between captain David Warner (caught behind for 39) and Jason Sangha (67). However, a three-wicket haul from Hurricanes captain Nathan Ellis, supported by Riley Meredith, restricted the Thunder to 182/7.
The Hurricanes’ chase was a masterclass in aggressive batting. Owen and Caleb Jewell provided a blistering start, reaching 98/0 after the powerplay. While Jewell and Nikhil Chaudhary fell to Tanveer Sangha, Owen continued his onslaught, reaching his century in a mere 39 balls. Although Owen’s innings eventually ended, Matthew Wade and Ben McDermott steered Hobart home with ease, securing the victory with six overs to spare.
Owen was deservedly named Player of the Match for his incredible performance. The victory marks a historic moment for the Hurricanes, who had previously been runners-up in 2014 and 2018.
