Sun Jan 26 22:28:07 IST 2025: ## Deadly Suicide Attack Kills 27 Nigerian Soldiers

**Abuja, Nigeria –** A suicide bombing in northeast Nigeria has claimed the lives of at least 27 Nigerian soldiers, making it one of the deadliest attacks on the military in recent years. The attack, which occurred on Sunday, January 26th, 2025, targeted a ground offensive launched on Friday against Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) militants in the Borno and Yobe states. A military officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the death toll, stating that several more soldiers are critically injured and the casualty count could rise. The bomber, driving an explosives-laden vehicle concealed in vegetation, rammed into a military convoy in the Timbuktu Triangle. ISWAP, a splinter group from Boko Haram, has claimed responsibility for the attack.

This attack comes amidst an ongoing 15-year conflict in the region, which has already resulted in an estimated 40,000 deaths and the displacement of approximately two million people. The conflict has been marked by ISWAP’s use of tactics such as roadside bombs and vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (VBIEDs).

Separately, a truck accident in southeastern Nigeria resulted in 18 deaths on Sunday. A petrol tanker suffered brake failure, crashing into 17 other vehicles and causing a fire that left victims burned beyond recognition, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC). The FRSC reported a total of 31 people were involved in the accident, with 10 injured and 3 unharmed. This incident follows a petrol tanker explosion last week that killed at least 98 people. Nigerian military officials have yet to comment on the suicide attack.
