**Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu –** A massive 160-foot-tall stone statue of Lord Murugan is set to be erected at the Marudhamalai temple in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, making it the tallest Murugan statue in Asia, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister P.K. Sekar Babu announced on Monday. A team of experts will assess the site’s suitability for the project.
The announcement comes amidst a wider government initiative to renovate and revitalize Murugan temples across Tamil Nadu. Minister Babu highlighted the recent consecration ceremonies in over 2,400 temples, many dedicated to Lord Murugan, including a Tamil-language ceremony at the Palani Murugan Temple. A program assisting senior citizens (aged 60-70) in visiting six major Murugan temples has already benefited 1,062 individuals.
Major renovation projects are underway at seven prominent Murugan temples, with a total allocation of ₹872 crore. Significant progress has been made at several sites, including Tiruchendur (₹400 crore renovation, with HCL contributing ₹200 crore), Palani (₹108 crore plan), Tiruttani (₹183 crore renovation), and Marudhamalai (₹20.5 crore in phases). Other temples like Siruvapuri, Vayalur, and Kandhal are also undergoing substantial renovations.
Minister Babu also addressed other temple-related matters, including the removal of encroachments at the Perur temple starting January 31st and the upcoming appointment of trustees for the Velliangiri Hills temple. He confirmed that consecration ceremonies at both Perur and Palani temples were conducted in Tamil. Lift installations at Marudhamalai are progressing, with completion expected by April.
