**Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, January 27, 2025** – A 35-year-old woman, Penumalla Ramya Smruthi, died on Monday at the Government General Hospital (GGH) in Kakinada after swallowing a feature phone while undergoing treatment for a mental illness. Smruthi, a resident of Bommuru village in East Godavari district, was initially admitted to the GGH in Rajamahendravaram.
According to GGH-Kakinada Superintendent Dr. Lavanya Kumari, Smruthi ingested the phone while receiving treatment. Doctors performed surgery to address a resulting hypoxic injury before transferring her to the Kakinada hospital on January 25th. She succumbed to post-surgical complications the following day.
The hospital authorities have released Smruthi’s body to her family. The incident has raised concerns regarding the care provided to patients with mental illnesses.
