Sun Jan 26 22:29:46 IST 2025: ## Tamil Nadu Villagers Use Gram Sabha Resolutions to Protect Environment, Culture
**Madurai, Tamil Nadu, January 26, 2025** – Villagers in Melur, Madurai East, and Kottampatti regions of Tamil Nadu have utilized gram sabha (village council) meetings to pass resolutions protecting their land from further exploitation. The move follows the recent cancellation of a controversial tungsten mining project, with residents now proactively safeguarding their environment and cultural heritage.
In a coordinated effort across approximately 35 panchayats, resolutions were passed designating Melur and surrounding areas as environmentally and culturally protected zones. This collective action demonstrates a newfound awareness of the power of gram sabha resolutions as a tool to prevent future destructive projects, according to K. Selvaraj, a resident of Kambur panchayat. While celebrating the mining project’s cancellation, concerns remain regarding the potential auction of an additional 35,000 acres previously surveyed for tungsten.
The resolutions weren’t limited to opposing mining. Residents of Kesampatti panchayat also sought to establish a sanctuary for the endangered Slender Loris species. Other resolutions included allowing farmers to graze their cattle in forest areas and a petition against the incorporation of Narasingam panchayat into the Madurai corporation.
However, the process wasn’t without challenges. S. Kallanai of Kacharayanpatti panchayat highlighted the need for increased police protection and official oversight during gram sabha meetings. He alleged that threats from influential individuals, opposed to certain resolutions, had intimidated villagers and suppressed participation. He emphasized the importance of ensuring participant safety to maintain the integrity and effectiveness of the gram sabha system as a vital component of democratic governance.
