Mon Jan 27 08:03:43 UTC 2025: ## Pune Grapples with Rising Guillain-Barré Syndrome Cases; One Death Reported
**Pune, Maharashtra –** A surge in Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases in Pune has raised concerns, with one death suspected to be linked to the neurological disorder. The number of GBS cases in the city has risen to 101, with 28 new cases reported recently.
According to a Times of India report, health officials confirmed a death suspected to be caused by GBS, although details remain limited. The affected population includes a significant number of children (19 under the age of 9) and elderly individuals (23 aged 50-83), with 16 patients currently on ventilators.
The first GBS case in Pune was reported on January 9th. Testing of biological samples from some patients has revealed the presence of Campylobacter jejuni bacteria, a known cause of approximately one-third of GBS cases worldwide and often associated with severe infections.
GBS is a rare neurological disorder where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own peripheral nerves, leading to muscle weakness, numbness, and potentially paralysis. While it is treatable, and most patients recover fully within 2-3 weeks with early intervention, some may experience lingering weakness. The rise in cases has prompted health officials to closely monitor the situation and provide necessary medical care.
