Mon Jan 27 14:07:04 UTC 2025: ## Uttarakhand Becomes First State to Implement Uniform Civil Code
**Dehradun, India** – Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami today launched the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), marking a historic step for the state and the nation. In a ceremony at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat in Dehradun, Dhami unveiled the UCC portal and rules, along with the official notification, making Uttarakhand the first state in India to formally implement the UCC.
The UCC, Dhami clarified, aims to eliminate discrimination based on caste, religion, and gender, ensuring equal rights for all citizens. Specific benefits highlighted include enhanced protection for women and a curb on practices like “halala” and triple talaq. The new code also provides legal protection for those in live-in relationships through registration. Scheduled tribes have been exempted from the UCC, in accordance with constitutional provisions granting them special protection.
Addressing concerns, Dhami emphasized that the UCC is not targeted against any particular religion or community but promotes equality and harmony. He stated that the implementation followed extensive consultations and recommendations from a committee headed by Justice Pramod Kohli. The Chief Minister personally registered on the new UCC portal, which will be free for the first six months. January 27th will be annually observed as UCC Day.
Dhami expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for their support, and acknowledged the contributions of various government departments in the implementation process. He described the launch as a new beginning for Uttarakhand and a significant step towards establishing equality and justice in Indian society.
