**PASADENA, CA** – The Eaton Fire, which tore through Altadena and Pasadena over two weeks ago, has left a trail of destruction in its wake, claiming at least 17 lives and destroying an estimated 9,400 structures. The fire, fueled by powerful winds, is now ranked as the fifth deadliest in California history, leaving residents grappling with the loss of their homes and the uncertainty of rebuilding their lives.

The rapid spread of the fire forced many residents to evacuate with little time to gather belongings. Several residents shared their experiences, highlighting the difficult choices made in the frantic moments before fleeing. An 18-year-old high school senior, Pedro Rivera Carter, prioritized his homework over valuables, while his mother, Yoëlle Carter Martínez, a third-grade teacher, salvaged a student-knitted scarf but lost important documents including her green card.

Brandon Walker, a first-generation college graduate, rescued his customized Bible, a symbol of his faith which he says is helping him cope with the loss of his family home, where his family had lived for three generations. The fire also destroyed the historically Black neighborhoods of Altadena, displacing many long-term residents.

Christopher Still and Amanda McIntosh, a couple with two sons and a love of music, managed to escape with their dogs and a few essentials, including McIntosh’s planner and an unexpected framed photo from their early years together. They lost their collection of over 20 musical instruments in the blaze.

Lexie Dreyfuss, a special education teacher who recently purchased her dream home, evacuated with her pets just minutes before the fire engulfed her property. She recounted the harrowing experience and the kindness of strangers who helped her replace her accidentally duplicated shoes.

Mason Swinnie, a musician, prioritized his music equipment, but lost his family home and studio. He emphasized the importance of community support in helping him navigate this difficult time and expressed his intention to create music to honor the Altadena community and the losses suffered.

The fire has not only caused widespread material damage but has also raised concerns about the future of Altadena, a close-knit community known for its racial and economic diversity. Residents are now facing the daunting task of rebuilding their homes and lives, with many uncertain about what the future holds for their beloved town. The rebuilding process is expected to be long and arduous, but the resilience and community spirit of Altadena’s residents remain steadfast.
