**New Delhi/Los Angeles** – The extradition of Tahawwur Rana, wanted in India for his alleged role in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, is imminent following the US Supreme Court’s rejection of his review petition. The court’s decision paves the way for Rana’s return to India to face trial for the attacks, which killed 166 people.
Rana, currently held in Los Angeles, was a childhood friend of David Headley, a key conspirator in the attacks. While acquitted in a US court of directly supporting the Mumbai attacks, he was convicted on other charges related to providing material support to Lashkar-e-Taiba and plotting to attack a Danish newspaper.
The Indian government is preparing to bring Rana back. A National Investigation Agency (NIA) team will be dispatched to the US to handle the extradition process, potentially using a chartered plane or commercial flight. The team’s composition is currently being finalized.
In recent weeks, Indian authorities responded to US queries regarding Rana’s treatment in Indian custody, assuring the provision of legal aid, appropriate security, and facilities meeting international standards at Tihar Jail. The Indian government emphasized adherence to legal guidelines and the prevention of torture.
The push for Rana’s extradition has intensified in recent years, reportedly spurred by efforts from former US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. Discussions between Sullivan and India’s NSA Ajit Doval further solidified this commitment. The extradition process has involved extensive cooperation between legal and investigative agencies in both countries.
