Sun Jan 26 22:49:41 IST 2025: ## Sudanese Army Chief Vows Total Victory as Hospital Attack Kills Dozens in Darfur
**Khartoum/Geneva** – Sudan’s army chief, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, visited the army’s General Command headquarters in Khartoum on Sunday, his first appearance there since government forces claimed to have ended a 20-month siege by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Al-Burhan praised his troops’ resilience and vowed to completely eradicate the RSF, rejecting any diplomatic solution. This declaration comes as the World Health Organization (WHO) condemned a deadly attack on a hospital in Darfur, highlighting the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
Al-Burhan’s visit to the recaptured headquarters symbolized the army’s claimed victory in Khartoum, although the RSF dismissed the announcement as propaganda. The army also recently retook Wad Madani, but reports of ethnic killings following the recapture raise serious concerns. Al Jazeera reported that al-Burhan’s statements signaled an unwavering commitment to military victory, rejecting negotiations with the RSF.
Meanwhile, the WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, decried a Friday attack on a Saudi-run hospital in el-Fasher, Darfur, which killed at least 70 people and injured 19. While the perpetrators remain unclear, a local official blamed an RSF drone strike. Saudi Arabia condemned the attack as a violation of international humanitarian law. The incident underscores the escalating violence in Darfur, where the RSF has been accused of numerous abuses, including attacks on displacement camps and essential infrastructure. El-Fasher, the largest city in Darfur, holds strategic importance as the region’s main airport and a key area contested between the army and RSF. Analysts warn that the RSF’s goal is to secure control of Darfur to establish a rival government, mirroring the situation in Libya. The RSF’s recent targeting of water dams, power stations, and oil refineries since January 15 further exacerbates the crisis. The conflict has already resulted in thousands of casualties.
