Sun Jan 26 15:42:56 UTC 2025: ## Brazil Demands Explanations After Deportation Flight Arrives with Handcuffed Passengers

**Manaus, Brazil** – The Brazilian government has launched a formal protest against the United States following the arrival of a deportation flight carrying 88 Brazilians shackled in handcuffs. The flight, which landed unexpectedly in Manaus on Friday due to a technical malfunction, sparked outrage and accusations of human rights abuses.

Brazil’s Foreign Ministry condemned the treatment as a “flagrant disregard for human rights,” while Justice Minister Ricardo Lewandowski informed President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of the incident, highlighting the violation of Brazilian citizens’ fundamental rights. The ministry has announced it will seek a formal explanation from the U.S. government.

Passengers described harrowing conditions aboard the flight, including a lack of water, inadequate ventilation leading to fainting, and restrictions on bathroom access. One passenger, Edgar Da Silva Moura, a 31-year-old computer technician, described the journey as a “nightmare,” while Luis Antonio Rodrigues Santos, 21, highlighted the suffering of passengers with respiratory issues due to a reported four-hour air conditioning failure. Minister of Human Rights Macae Evaristo confirmed that children with autism were also among the deportees.

Footage aired on Brazilian television showed passengers disembarking with their hands and ankles shackled. President Lula responded by dispatching a Brazilian Air Force plane to transport the deportees to their final destinations, ensuring a more dignified and safe journey.

While a government source stated the deportation flight wasn’t directly linked to President Trump’s newly implemented immigration policies, but rather to a 2017 bilateral agreement, the incident comes amidst a renewed crackdown on illegal immigration under the Trump administration. Trump’s administration has implemented mass deportations, using military aircraft for repatriation flights, a departure from previous practices. Deportation flights to Guatemala and other countries have also drawn attention.

The incident underscores rising tensions between Brazil and the U.S. over immigration policy. Brazil’s strong reaction highlights the growing international concern over the Trump administration’s hardline approach to immigration and its potential human rights implications.
