Sun Jan 26 01:57:01 UTC 2025: ## Mumbai Attacks: Tahawwur Rana’s Extradition to India Clears Final Legal Hurdle

**New Delhi, India** – Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a Canadian national convicted in the US for aiding the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, will be extradited to India after exhausting all legal appeals. The US Supreme Court’s recent rejection of his review request clears the final obstacle, paving the way for his return to face charges in connection with the attacks that killed at least 166 people.

Rana, a Pakistani-origin doctor who previously worked for the Pakistan Army, was convicted in 2011 in a US federal court for providing material support to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), the Pakistan-based group responsible for the Mumbai attacks. His involvement was revealed through the testimony of David Headley, another key conspirator who detailed Rana’s logistical and financial support, including assistance in obtaining a visa for his repeated reconnaissance trips to Mumbai. Rana also allegedly visited Mumbai with his wife and stayed at the Taj Mahal Hotel, a target of the attacks.

India’s request for Rana’s extradition, first submitted in 2019, has been a protracted diplomatic effort. While Rana argued he could not be tried twice for the same offense, the US Solicitor General clarified that the charges for which India seeks his extradition were not covered by the US prosecution.

The extradition marks a significant diplomatic victory for India. Former Maharashtra police chief PK Jain stated that Rana’s close ties to the Pakistani spy agency ISI make him a valuable source of information about the conspiracy behind the attacks. Bombay High Court advocate Aniket Nikam confirmed that upon arrival, Rana will face new charges and a fresh trial. The extradition process will involve Indian authorities taking custody of Rana upon his deportation from the US. The timing of his arrival in India is yet to be announced.
