Sat Jan 25 18:50:41 UTC 2025: ## Bengaluru Faces Looming Water Crisis: Groundwater Depletion Threatens South-East, Whitefield
**Bengaluru, Jan 25 (PTI)** – Parts of Bengaluru, particularly South-East Bengaluru and Whitefield, are facing a severe water shortage risk this summer, according to the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB). A groundbreaking study conducted in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has identified 80 wards, including 110 villages, as highly reliant on rapidly depleting groundwater.
The study, the first of its kind in India, reveals a projected groundwater level decline of 5 meters in central Bengaluru, 10-15 meters in CMC areas, and a staggering 20-25 meters in the 110 villages surrounding the city. Bengaluru currently extracts approximately 800 million liters of groundwater daily through borewells.
BWSSB Chairman Ram Prasath Manohar urged residents, especially in high-risk areas, to conserve water and switch to Cauvery water connections wherever possible. He highlighted the Cauvery Phase 5 Project as a sustainable solution to address the city’s growing water needs. The initiative, guided by Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, involved a special task force analyzing six months of data to create a sustainable action plan. Manohar emphasized the study as a major step towards ensuring sustainable water management in Bengaluru.
