CHENNAI, January 26, 2025 – A proposed ₹8 crore revamp of Nageshwara Rao Park in Mylapore, Chennai, has met with resistance from local residents and regular park users. While the Greater Chennai Corporation plans to add amenities such as food kiosks, an open-air theatre, and a herbal garden, many believe the plan prioritizes flashy additions over essential maintenance and preservation of the park’s natural beauty.
At a recent meeting with Mylapore MLA Dha. Velu, attendees voiced concerns that the extensive construction would further detract from the park’s existing charm, already impacted by ongoing water board and other construction works. Critics argue that adding food kiosks will increase litter and disrupt the peaceful atmosphere. Instead, they advocate for improvements to existing facilities, including damaged equipment repairs.
Specific concerns raised include the need for a concrete boundary wall, adequate restrooms, controlled food vending outside the park, improved lighting, smooth walking paths, mosquito control, and security personnel. Maintaining free entry and providing standby power were also highlighted as crucial.
While the Corporation aims to revitalize the park, the residents’ feedback emphasizes a need for a more balanced approach that prioritizes upkeep and retains the park’s natural appeal. The debate underscores the tension between ambitious redevelopment projects and the preservation of existing green spaces within the city.
