**Washington, D.C.** – Stargazers are in for a treat this January, as a spectacular alignment of six planets will grace the night sky. According to astronomical websites like EarthSky, Mars, Jupiter, Uranus, Venus, and Saturn will be visible shortly after dusk, though viewing Uranus and Neptune will require binoculars or a telescope. While planetary alignments aren’t uncommon, a simultaneous appearance of this many bright planets is a rarer event, notes NASA.
The alignment, already visible this week, will reappear next week and offer prime viewing opportunities at the beginning of February. The planets appear aligned from Earth’s perspective as they orbit the sun along a similar path, but this arrangement is temporary due to their varying orbital speeds.
Observers in the Northern Hemisphere should look towards the southern sky approximately 90 minutes after sunset, weather permitting. Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Venus should be easily visible to the naked eye, while Uranus and Neptune will appear dimmer, even with optical aid. Mercury is currently positioned behind the sun, making it difficult to observe.
Future planetary alignments are also on the horizon, including a rare seven-planet alignment on February 28th, featuring Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune – a phenomenon last seen during a total solar eclipse in April. Another six-planet alignment is predicted for August 29, 2025.
