**DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip – January 26, 2025** – The return of displaced Palestinians to northern Gaza under a fragile ceasefire has been hampered by violence and a disagreement over hostage releases, leaving thousands stranded and fueling tensions.
One Palestinian was killed and seven others wounded by Israeli fire overnight, according to local health officials. This follows a separate incident on Saturday where a man was killed and three others injured. The violence occurred as thousands of Palestinians gathered, hoping to return to their homes through the Netzarim corridor, as stipulated in the ceasefire agreement.
The planned return was delayed by Israel after the failure to receive a civilian hostage, Arbel Yehoud, from Hamas as agreed upon. Israel claims this hostage was supposed to be released prior to the release of four female Israeli soldiers, whereas Hamas accuses Israel of using this as a pretext to delay the return of Palestinians.
Further complicating the situation, U.S. President Donald Trump suggested that most of Gaza’s population should be temporarily resettled in neighboring countries, a proposal that has been previously rejected by Egypt, Jordan, and the Palestinians.
The ceasefire, brokered by the United States, Egypt, and Qatar, has seen the release of four female Israeli soldiers and approximately 200 Palestinian prisoners. However, around 90 hostages remain in Gaza, and Israel believes many of these are dead. The current phase of the ceasefire runs until early March and the release of remaining hostages is dependent on complex, yet-to-be-negotiated second phase.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in over 47,000 Palestinian deaths, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, and more than 17,000 fighters killed, according to the Israeli military. Gaza’s infrastructure has been devastated, and roughly 90% of its 2.3 million population was displaced.
The situation remains volatile, with both sides accusing each other of violating the agreement. Mediators continue to work to resolve the deadlock and secure a lasting peace.
