Sat Jan 25 06:27:06 UTC 2025: ## Rajapaksa Son Arrested on Corruption Charges in Sri Lanka

**Colombo, Sri Lanka –** Yoshitha Rajapaksa, son of former Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, was arrested on Saturday on corruption charges related to a property purchase. The arrest stems from an investigation into alleged misconduct during his father’s presidency (2005-2015), focusing on the acquisition of a holiday home in Kataragama. This is not Yoshitha’s first brush with the law; he was previously arrested in 2016 on a separate financial offense.

The arrest comes a week after Yoshitha’s uncle, former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, was questioned by police regarding the same property. Furthermore, Mahinda Rajapaksa’s eldest son, Namal Rajapaksa, has also faced police questioning in a separate property case. These investigations are part of the new government’s pledge to hold accountable individuals accused of wrongdoing during Mahinda Rajapaksa’s tenure. The government, led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, assumed power in November, vowing to address corruption before upcoming elections. Adding to the unfolding events, Mahinda Rajapaksa filed a Supreme Court petition on Friday to reinstate his security detail, significantly reduced by the government last month.
