Mangaluru, January 26, 2025 – Karnataka Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda stated today that a consensus within the State Cabinet is necessary before implementing the Socio-Economic and Education Survey (caste census). While acknowledging the Congress government’s desire to implement the survey report, submitted by the Karnataka State Permanent Commission for Backward Classes, Gowda emphasized the need for a unified approach to avoid disrupting the social fabric.
“The Chief Minister is working to build this consensus,” Gowda said during a Republic Day address in Udupi, where he highlighted economic inequality as a key concern. He admitted to internal cabinet disagreements regarding the report, stressing the importance of considering all viewpoints in a democratic process before making any unilateral decisions.
Addressing concerns about harassment of borrowers by microfinance firms, Gowda stated that while the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the central government ultimately hold responsibility for regulating these firms, the Karnataka government is taking action due to perceived inaction at the national level. Stringent action will be taken against firms violating RBI guidelines, he added.
