Sun Jan 26 13:20:00 UTC 2025: ## China Cracks Down on Panda Fan Culture

**Beijing, China** – China’s vibrant online panda fan community, once tolerated for its activism and criticism of panda breeding practices, is facing a harsh crackdown. Authorities are arresting and questioning influencers accused of spreading “rumors” and engaging in what they deem “radical fan culture.”

The crackdown comes amidst a broader government effort to control online fan culture under President Xi Jinping. While Washington D.C. celebrated the arrival of two pandas on loan from China, generating enthusiastic social media buzz, the situation in China is vastly different.

Authorities have targeted individuals who advocated for better animal welfare and criticized the international loan programs, including the Washington exchange. State media has issued warnings against excessive panda fandom, signaling a shift in policy.

According to reports, at least 12 individuals in Sichuan province have been arrested for allegedly smearing panda experts, inciting violence, and spreading misinformation. Police claim to have uncovered “radical animal protection gangs” in three provinces, alleging harassment of breeding center staff and financial gain from online donations.

This crackdown marks a significant change. For years, the government largely overlooked online criticism from panda enthusiasts concerned about aggressive breeding techniques that harmed bears and led to the premature separation of cubs from their mothers. Now, that tolerance has ended, silencing a significant voice in animal welfare advocacy within China.
