**New Delhi –** The extradition of Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a convicted associate of David Coleman Headley in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, is imminent following the US Supreme Court’s dismissal of his appeal. Rana, a 64-year-old Canadian national of Pakistani origin, has exhausted all legal avenues to avoid deportation to India.
The Supreme Court’s denial, issued on January 21st, concludes a years-long legal battle. Rana, currently detained in Los Angeles, was convicted in 2011 for providing material support to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), the Pakistan-based group responsible for the attacks that killed 166 people, including six Americans.
Indian authorities have long sought Rana’s extradition, citing his crucial role in facilitating the attacks. Headley, who conducted reconnaissance for the Mumbai attacks, testified that Rana provided logistical and financial support, including assisting with a visa application. Rana’s prior service with the Pakistan Army is also considered relevant to the case.
The Indian government initially requested Rana’s extradition in 2019. Following the Supreme Court’s decision, officials expect the extradition process to begin shortly, with Indian officers traveling to the US to take Rana into custody. His interrogation is anticipated to yield crucial information, potentially leading to the reopening of the 26/11 case and the uncovering of missing details. Another key conspirator, Sayed Zabiuddin Ansari, is already imprisoned in Mumbai. Ajmal Kasab, the sole surviving attacker, was executed in 2012.
