**Kathmandu, Nepal** – Unlike many nations around the world, Nepal has a unique history. While numerous countries endured periods of colonization and subjugation, Nepal stands apart as a nation that has never been successfully conquered or colonized. This unique status is why Nepal does not celebrate an independence day.
Throughout history, Nepal faced numerous attempts at invasion and domination. The Mughal Empire, under rulers like Shamsuddin Ilyas Shah (1349) and Mir Kasim (18th century), launched attacks but were repelled by the Gurkha army. Even the British Empire, a formidable force, clashed with Nepal in a significant war. However, the conflict resulted in the Sugauli Treaty, where Nepal ceded some territory but maintained its sovereignty. The treaty effectively marked the end of British attempts at colonization.
Nepal’s rugged terrain and strategic geographic location have played a significant role in its successful defense against foreign powers. This natural barrier, coupled with the fierce resistance of the Gurkha army, prevented any lasting foreign rule. While it faced attempts at conquest, Nepal’s resilience preserved its independence throughout history. Therefore, the nation doesn’t observe an independence day as it was never subjected to colonial rule.
