Sat Jan 25 07:10:00 UTC 2025: **Torrey Pines Wind Delays Farmers Insurance Open, Åberg and Griffin Share Lead**
SAN DIEGO, CA – High winds caused an 86-minute delay and significantly impacted scoring on the second day of the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. Gusts exceeding 35 mph made playing conditions extremely challenging, with several players reporting that balls were moved by the wind and hats were blown off. Ludvig Åberg and Lanto Griffin battled the elements to share the lead at 6-under 138.
Åberg, the first-round leader, carded a 3-over 75 on the South Course, while Griffin shot a 72. Danny Walker sits one stroke back at 5-under, followed by Chris Gotterup, Hayden Springer, and Sungjae Im at 4-under. The wind dramatically increased scores on both the North and South courses compared to the first round.
“Throw the score out the window,” said Griffin, a recent PGA Tour Q-school graduate, describing the difficult conditions. Many players noted the unpredictable nature of the wind, which shifted directions and intensity throughout their rounds. Even world number four Hideki Matsuyama struggled, finishing with a 75 but still making the cut.
The delay, which began at 2:05 p.m. and lasted until 6:31 p.m., forced players to rush to complete their rounds in the remaining diminished wind. Several players, including Max Homa, the 2023 champion, withdrew. Homa cited illness after a poor second round. Amateur Luke Clanton also chose to halt his round, leaving him with one hole to complete Friday.
A brush fire near the course briefly added to the chaos, but was quickly contained by firefighters. The challenging conditions and unexpected delays promise a thrilling conclusion to the tournament.
