Sat Jan 25 04:36:04 UTC 2025: ## Supreme Court Clears Path for Extradition of 26/11 Mumbai Attack Suspect Tahawwur Rana to India

**Washington D.C.** – The US Supreme Court has rejected the final appeal of Tahawwur Rana, a Canadian national of Pakistani origin, paving the way for his extradition to India. Rana, 64, is a key suspect in the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, which killed 166 people, including six Americans.

Rana’s petition for a writ of certiorari was denied by the Supreme Court on January 21st, effectively ending his legal challenges against extradition. He had previously lost appeals in several US federal courts, including the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. His defense argued that his acquittal on related charges in a Chicago court should prevent his extradition, as India’s charges are based on the same conduct.

However, the US Solicitor General, Elizabeth B. Prelogar, countered that India’s charges, including forgery, encompassed actions not addressed in the Chicago trial. The Supreme Court’s decision now allows India to proceed with its extradition request.

Rana, currently detained in Los Angeles, is known to have ties to David Coleman Headley, a key conspirator in the 26/11 attacks. The attacks involved a 60-hour siege across multiple iconic Mumbai locations by ten Pakistani terrorists. Rana’s extradition marks a significant step in bringing those responsible for the devastating attacks to justice.
