**Pune, Maharashtra –** A seven-member team from India’s Union Health Ministry has been deployed to Pune to assist in managing a growing outbreak of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS). Three team members are already on the ground, working to contain the situation, with the remaining members expected to arrive next week.
The outbreak has seen a sharp increase in cases, with six new patients diagnosed on Friday, bringing the total to 73. The affected individuals include 47 men and 26 women, with 14 currently requiring ventilator support. GBS, an autoimmune disorder where the body’s immune system attacks nerves, is often triggered by bacterial or viral infections.
The Maharashtra State Health Department formed a Rapid Response Team earlier this week after an initial surge in suspected cases. While most GBS patients recover fully with treatment, the significant increase in cases has prompted the central government’s intervention to provide support and expertise.
