Sat Jan 25 12:57:39 IST 2025: ## Supreme Court to Hear Plea for Tahir Hussain’s Interim Bail

**New Delhi, January 25, 2025** – A three-judge Supreme Court bench will hear a plea on January 28 from Tahir Hussain, a former Delhi councillor and accused in the February 2020 Delhi riots, seeking interim bail to campaign in the upcoming Assembly elections.

Hussain’s previous request for interim bail was denied on January 22 after a split verdict from a two-judge bench. While one judge dismissed the plea, the other favored granting bail. The matter was subsequently referred to the Chief Justice for the constitution of a new bench.

The Delhi High Court had previously granted Hussain custody parole to file his nomination papers for the Mustafabad constituency as an AIMIM candidate but denied his request for interim bail to actively campaign, citing the gravity of the charges against him. Hussain is accused in multiple FIRs related to the riots, including a case related to the death of Intelligence Bureau staffer Ankit Sharma, whose body was found with multiple injuries in a riot-affected area. He is also facing charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and a money laundering case.

The 2020 Delhi riots resulted in 53 deaths and numerous injuries. The upcoming hearing before Justices Vikram Nath, Sanjay Karol, and Sandeep Mehta will determine whether Hussain will be granted interim bail to participate in the electoral process.
