The nominees also include a diverse selection of documentaries. These range from *Redemption*, focusing on a death row inmate’s final days, to *Shiori Ito*, chronicling a journalist’s investigation into sexual assault allegations in Japan, and *Lumumba*, a documentary about the musical protests following the Congolese leader’s assassination.
Adding to the eclectic mix are several other notable films. *A Cinderella Story*, a comedic drama, garnered six nominations; *The American Cousin*, a buddy comedy road trip, received nominations for screenplay and supporting actor; *Edward*, a psychological drama, was nominated for its makeup and hairstyling; and *Planet of the Apes* secured a visual effects nomination. Even a controversial biopic of Donald Trump, starring Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong, received acting nominations. Finally, Ridley Scott’s *Gladiator* sequel received a costume design nomination.
