ALLAHABAD, INDIA – Former Bollywood actress Mamta Kulkarni’s appointment as a Mahamandaleshwar (a high-ranking spiritual leader) within the Kinnar Akhara, a Hindu monastic order, at the ongoing Mahakumbh Mela has ignited a firestorm of controversy. The ceremony, conducted Friday, bestowed upon Kulkarni the new spiritual name Shriyamai Mamta Nand Giri.
While some saints celebrated Kulkarni’s transition to a spiritual path, arguing that everyone deserves a second chance regardless of past accusations (which were never proven in court), others strongly condemned the decision. Critics, including Shri Swami Anand Swaroop Maharaj of Shambhavi Peeth and Mahamandaleshwar Balaknanda Ji Maharaj of Niranjani Anand Akhara, questioned the Kinnar Akhara’s vetting process and expressed concerns about Kulkarni’s controversial past, including unproven drug-related allegations. They emphasized the importance of rigorous character checks and adherence to traditional criteria for such a high spiritual office.
Mahamandaleshwar Ramakrishnanand Giri highlighted the importance of ethical conduct and societal respect for those holding such positions. Even supportive voices, like Mahamandaleshwar Yati Narsinghanand Giri and the President of the Parishad, Ravindra Puri, called for a period of observation to ensure Kulkarni’s commitment to her new spiritual role. Narayan Giri Ji Maharaj, the Juna Akhara’s international spokesperson, explained that the Kinnar Akhara, established in 2019, has autonomy in its decisions regarding appointments.
Kulkarni’s Bollywood career, marked by both success and controversy, including a topless photoshoot and allegations of underworld connections, further fuels the debate. While she has denied past allegations and stated that her love for God now supersedes all else, the controversy surrounding her appointment continues to highlight the ongoing discussion about the qualifications and backgrounds of spiritual leaders within Hindu traditions. The debate will undoubtedly continue as the Mahakumbh Mela progresses.
