**New Delhi, India** – India celebrated its 76th Republic Day on Sunday, January 26, 2025, under the theme “Swarnim Bharat: Virasat aur Vikas” (Golden India: Legacy and Progress). The national holiday commemorates the adoption of the Indian Constitution in 1950, marking the transition from British dominion to a sovereign republic.
This year’s celebrations featured a special guest: Indonesian President H.E. Prabowo Subianto, making his first state visit to India since assuming office in October 2024. The festivities included the traditional grand parade in New Delhi, showcasing India’s military might and cultural diversity through vibrant performances. Awards and honors were also bestowed upon distinguished citizens for their contributions to the nation.
The Republic Day celebrations underscored the core values enshrined in the Indian Constitution – justice, equality, and fraternity. The date, January 26th, holds historical significance, coinciding with the declaration of Purna Swaraj (complete independence) by the Indian National Congress in 1930.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed concern regarding disruptions to screenings of the film “Emergency” in the UK, allegedly orchestrated by pro-Khalistani elements. A spokesperson stated that the Indian government has raised its concerns with the UK government and urged for appropriate action to be taken, emphasizing the need for equal application of freedom of speech. The film, directed by BJP MP and actress Kangana Ranaut, depicts the 1975 Emergency in India.
