**Pune, India –** The number of suspected Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases in Pune has risen to 73, with six new cases reported today, health officials announced. The surge prompted the Maharashtra State Health Department to form a Rapid Response Team (RRT) to investigate the cause of the outbreak.
Of the 73 cases, 47 are men and 26 are women, with 14 patients currently requiring ventilator support. The RRT, in collaboration with the Pune Municipal Corporation and local health authorities, has already surveyed over 7,200 homes across the city and surrounding rural districts. This includes 1,943 homes within Pune Municipal Corporation limits, 1,750 in Chinchwad, and 3,522 in rural areas.
GBS is a rare neurological disorder where the body’s immune system attacks the peripheral nervous system, leading to muscle weakness, loss of sensation, and potentially breathing difficulties. While alarming, health officials stress that GBS is not contagious and cannot cause an epidemic or pandemic. The investigation into the sudden increase in cases continues.
