**Keylong, Lahaul-Spiti:** The Department of Women and Child Development held a district-level function at the Tribal Museum hall in Keylong today to commemorate National Girl Child Day. The event, themed “Empowerment of Girls for a Brighter Future,” saw Project Officer Parul Katiyar of the District Rural Development Authority as chief guest and Superintendent of Police Mayank Chaudhary as special guest.

Katiyar stressed the critical role of girls in society and highlighted education as the key to women’s empowerment, emphasizing that educating a woman educates her family and, subsequently, society. She called for an end to gender discrimination and urged attendees to support girls’ dreams and aspirations. The chief guest also used the occasion to raise awareness about women’s rights, highlighting government initiatives aimed at women’s empowerment. She noted the relatively high female population in Lahaul-Spiti compared to the national average.

District Programme Officer Sanjay Dogra spoke about the rights of girls and the achievements of women in various fields. The event also featured cultural performances by local children, who were subsequently honored for their participation. The celebration was attended by various departmental officials, including the District Child Protection Officer Dr Heera Nand, and members of local self-help groups. The event aimed to promote awareness of the importance of empowering girls and providing them with equal opportunities.
