Sat Jan 25 14:20:00 UTC 2025: ## Islanders Sign Controversial Defenseman Tony DeAngelo to Fill Injury Gap

**UNIONDALE, NY** – The New York Islanders have signed defenseman Tony DeAngelo to a one-year contract for the remainder of the 2024-25 season, the team announced Friday. The deal, a prorated league minimum of $775,000, comes after DeAngelo’s recent departure from SKA Saint Petersburg in the KHL due to family reasons.

DeAngelo, 29, will be required to clear waivers before joining the team. His signing is intended to bolster the Islanders’ blue line, weakened by a lower-body injury to Noah Dobson, who is expected to be sidelined for a week to week period.

The offensive-minded defenseman, who boasts 48 goals and 162 assists in 371 career NHL games, is expected to contribute significantly to the Islanders’ power play, currently ranked last in the league at 12.5%. During his short stint in the KHL, DeAngelo led SKA Saint Petersburg in assists (26) and scoring among defensemen (32 points in 34 games).

DeAngelo’s NHL career has been marked by both skill and controversy. He was bought out by the New York Rangers in 2021 following a physical altercation with teammate Alexandar Georgiev. Despite this incident, he has played for the Arizona Coyotes, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, and Carolina Hurricanes.

The Islanders, currently 15th in the Eastern Conference, hope DeAngelo’s offensive prowess will help them close the eight-point gap separating them from a playoff spot.
