Sat Jan 25 16:25:00 UTC 2025: ## Chimpanzee “Contagious Urination” Baffles Scientists

**Kyoto, Japan –** A new study published in The Hindu reveals a surprising social behavior among chimpanzees: contagious urination. Researchers at the Kumamoto Sanctuary in Japan observed 20 captive chimpanzees over 600 hours, documenting 1,328 urination events. Analysis revealed a statistically significant synchronization of urination events, suggesting that one chimpanzee urinating increases the likelihood of others doing so nearby.

The study, published January 25th, 2025, found that this “contagious urination” is particularly pronounced among lower-ranking chimpanzees, who are more likely to urinate when others do. This suggests that social hierarchy plays a significant role in influencing urination patterns within the troop, with the behavior appearing to “flow down” the dominance structure. The proximity of the observing chimpanzee to the initial urinator also increased the likelihood of the behavior.

This unprecedented finding raises questions about the complex social dynamics and communication within chimpanzee societies, prompting further research into the underlying mechanisms and implications of this unusual phenomenon.
