**Pune, India (January 25, 2025)** – A cluster of suspected Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) cases has prompted a health alert in Pune, India. Six new suspected cases were reported on Friday, bringing the total to 73 since a recent surge.

The State Health Department initiated a Rapid Response Team (RRT) investigation on Tuesday after an initial cluster of 24 suspected cases. Of the 73 total cases, 47 are men and 26 are women, with 14 currently requiring ventilator support.

The RRT and Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) health department are actively surveying affected areas, primarily focusing on the Sinhgad Road region. Over 7,200 houses have been surveyed across Pune Municipal Corporation, Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, and rural areas.

GBS, a rare neurological disorder causing sudden numbness and muscle weakness, is typically triggered by bacterial or viral infections. While prevalent in pediatric and young adult populations, health officials stress that it does not pose an epidemic or pandemic risk. Most patients are expected to make a full recovery with appropriate treatment.
