Sat Jan 25 13:52:24 UTC 2025: ## Pune Grapples with Guillain-Barré Syndrome Outbreak; 67 Cases Reported
**PUNE, INDIA** – A cluster of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases in Pune has health officials on high alert. The city reported eight suspected cases on Thursday, bringing the total number to 67, according to the state health department. The sudden surge has prompted the deployment of a Rapid Response Team (RRT) to investigate the outbreak.
Of the 67 cases, 43 are women and 24 are men. Thirteen patients currently require ventilator support, stated Dr. Vaishali Jadhav, assistant health officer with the Pune Municipal Corporation.
GBS is a rare neurological disorder where the body’s immune system attacks the nerves, causing muscle weakness, numbness, and tingling, typically starting in the feet and legs before spreading upwards. While the exact cause remains unknown, it’s often associated with preceding respiratory or digestive infections. Other potential triggers include bacterial or viral infections, recent vaccinations, surgery, and neuropathy. The condition is not contagious or hereditary.
The RRT is currently investigating potential sources, including water contamination, by surveying affected areas, collecting water samples, and interviewing residents. While GBS can affect people of any age, it most commonly impacts individuals between 30 and 50 years old.
The condition, which can be life-threatening, lacks a cure. Treatment typically involves immunotherapy, such as plasma exchange, and hospitalization, particularly for patients experiencing breathing difficulties.
