Sat Jan 25 15:37:48 IST 2025: ## Pune Grapples with Guillain-Barré Syndrome Outbreak: 73 Cases Reported
**Pune, India** – A cluster of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases has health officials in Pune, India on high alert. The Maharashtra State Health Department confirmed 73 suspected cases, including six new cases reported today, prompting the formation of a Rapid Response Team (RRT) to investigate the outbreak. The RRT is currently exploring the possibility of contaminated water as a potential source.
The majority of cases (47) are men, and 14 patients are currently on ventilators. While GBS is a rare autoimmune disorder, causing muscle weakness and paralysis, the sudden surge in cases has raised concerns.
Dr. Vikram Vora, Medical Director of International SOS, explained that GBS occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nervous system. While not contagious, the condition can be life-threatening if breathing muscles are affected. Common triggers include various infections such as Campylobacter jejuni (often from undercooked poultry), influenza, and even COVID-19.
Symptoms can include muscle weakness, numbness, tingling, and in severe cases, paralysis. Early diagnosis and treatment, often involving immunotherapy or plasma exchange, are crucial for recovery.
The health department urges citizens to practice good hygiene, including frequent handwashing, avoiding contact with sick individuals, and consuming safe food and water to minimize the risk of infections that may trigger GBS. Anyone experiencing symptoms such as muscle weakness or numbness should seek immediate medical attention.
