**Pune, India** – A cluster of suspected Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases in Pune has health officials on high alert. Six new suspected cases have been reported, bringing the total to 73, according to the Maharashtra State Health Department. Of these, 14 patients require ventilator support. The cases are split almost evenly between men (47) and women (26).
The sudden increase prompted the formation of a Rapid Response Team (RRT) to investigate the cause. The RRT, in collaboration with local authorities, has already surveyed over 7,200 homes across Pune city and its surrounding rural districts. While GBS is a rare autoimmune disorder that attacks the nervous system, causing muscle weakness and sensory loss, officials emphasize that it is not contagious and cannot cause an epidemic or pandemic. The ongoing investigation aims to determine if a common factor is responsible for the cluster.
