Fri Jan 24 14:12:46 IST 2025: ## India Reverses Jaffna Cultural Centre Renaming After Backlash
**COLOMBO, SRI LANKA –** The renaming of the India-funded Jaffna Cultural Centre in Sri Lanka has been reversed following strong opposition from Jaffna politicians and intellectuals. Initially renamed “Thiruvalluvar Cultural Centre” in honor of the Tamil poet-philosopher, the Indian High Commission has reinstated “Jaffna” to the title, now displaying it as “Jaffna Thiruvalluvar Cultural Centre.”
The change, announced January 18th by the Indian High Commission and unveiled jointly by the High Commissioner and Sri Lanka’s Minister of Buddhasasana, was celebrated on social media by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. However, the omission of “Jaffna” from the name sparked immediate controversy.
While neither government officially explained the initial renaming, sources suggest the decision originated in New Delhi, with the Sri Lankan government reportedly having no objections. The $12 million centre, inaugurated in 2023, was built on land belonging to the Jaffna Municipal Council.
Sri Lankan Tamil politicians, including Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar, criticized the omission of “Jaffna,” highlighting concerns about the downgrading of the Tamil language on the nameplate and the lack of prior consultation. The Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK) party formally protested the change, emphasizing the importance of “Jaffna” to the local Tamil identity.
Following the backlash, Indian authorities responded to ITAK’s concerns and added “Jaffna” back to the nameplate, resolving the immediate conflict. The incident underscores the sensitivity surrounding cultural identity and the importance of local consultation in international development projects.
