EL PASO, TX – The Trump administration has initiated a large-scale deportation operation, with the first flights carrying hundreds of individuals departing for Guatemala on Thursday. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the operation, releasing images of detainees boarding military aircraft at Biggs Army Airfield in El Paso, Texas. A U.S. defense official confirmed the use of Department of Defense aircraft for these repatriation flights.
According to officials, one flight alone carried 80 people. Acting Secretary of Defense Robert Salesses stated that the Department of Defense is supporting the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in deporting over 5,000 individuals from San Diego and El Paso. ICE agents have also reportedly arrested over 530 illegal immigrants in a single day, including child sex offenders and gang members. Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) lauded the operation, stating that President Trump has accomplished more in four days than President Biden did in four years regarding border security.
However, the operation has faced criticism. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka condemned a raid at a fish market in Newark, New Jersey, alleging violations of the Fourth Amendment due to warrantless arrests, including that of a US military veteran. He called the action “an egregious act” and vowed to protect civil and human rights.
Gen Z political commentator Morgonn McMichael is expected to comment on the younger generation’s response to these actions, particularly in comparison to the Trump administration’s immigration policies. A separate report also suggests that Vice President Kamala Harris is consulting with Hillary Clinton about her political future. The ongoing situation at the border continues to be a focal point of national political debate.
