**Salem, Tamil Nadu, January 26, 2025** – A newborn baby girl, sold by her uncle for ₹3.20 lakh, has been rescued by Salem police and Childline officials. The infant, born on January 6th at Salem Government Hospital to a 37-year-old woman from Moolapillaiyar Kovil, was sold to a grocery shop owner in Shevapet due to the parents’ reported financial difficulties and health issues.
The uncle, Ramesh, facilitated the sale to Raja, the grocery shop owner. However, Raja subsequently returned the child to the Annathanapatti police station on Friday night. The baby is now in the care of Childline officials. Police have registered a case and are investigating Ramesh, Raja, and other family members involved in the transaction. The investigation is ongoing.
