**GURUGRAM, INDIA – January 25, 2025** – A crackdown on motorcycle stunt riding is underway in the Delhi-NCR region, following a surge in social media videos showcasing dangerous stunts and resulting public safety concerns. The crackdown has impacted both organized riding groups and individual stunt riders.
For 16 years, the Delhi Bikers Breakfast Run (DBBR), a group of over 100 riders, has held monthly Saturday rides starting at the Delhi-Gurugram border. However, their January 25th ride was disrupted when police ordered the group to disperse, citing numerous complaints about reckless behavior and stunts in the area, formerly a popular gathering spot near a defunct toll plaza. While DBBR organizers emphasized their group’s commitment to safety and condemned the actions of a few unruly bikers, the police maintained a zero-tolerance policy for motorcycle gatherings in the area.
This incident highlights a broader issue: the blurring of lines between hobbyist motorcyclists and those engaging in dangerous stunts. The popularity of showcasing motorcycle stunts on social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube has led to a rise in reckless riding, with some videos garnering tens of millions of views. These videos often depict stunts performed on busy roads and highways, disregarding traffic laws and endangering the public.
Authorities are responding with increased enforcement. In one incident, 79 bikers were fined and charged with creating a public nuisance for speeding and reckless riding on the Yamuna Expressway. Police investigations suggest many of these incidents are coordinated via social media.
Professional stunt riders, like Rahul Sharma, express concern that the actions of irresponsible riders are tarnishing the image of the sport and hindering the growth of a professional stunt riding culture in India. Currently, stunt riding lacks official recognition as a sport, and there is no governing body to regulate it.
The rise in motorcycle stunt riding is linked to increased motorcycle sales in India and a growing interest in motorcycling as a hobby, particularly among younger generations with disposable income. Experts point to the introduction of sporty motorcycles in the late 1990s and early 2000s, coupled with reality TV shows featuring motorcycle stunts, as catalysts for this trend.
Several initiatives are being suggested to address the issue, including the creation of designated areas for safe stunt riding practice. However, until such regulations are in place, police crackdowns are expected to continue, forcing a distinction between responsible riders and those who prioritize online fame over public safety.
