Sat Jan 25 20:50:00 IST 2025: ## India’s ICC Champions Trophy Squad Selection Sparks Debate
**New Delhi:** The Indian cricket team’s selection for the ICC Champions Trophy has drawn sharp criticism for the omission of several high-profile players, including Mohammed Siraj and Sanju Samson. While Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli headline the squad, the inclusion of Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul as wicket-keepers has been questioned. Mohammed Shami’s return after the ODI World Cup is a notable inclusion.
Former wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik defended the selection committee’s decision, stating that while Siraj’s exclusion is regrettable, it’s justifiable given the exceptional ODI form of Jasprit Bumrah, Shami, and Arshdeep Singh. Karthik also explained Samson’s omission, attributing it partly to his absence from the Vijay Hazare Trophy team. Despite a recent century and a strong white-ball record, Samson’s exclusion has generated considerable controversy.
While Samson was included in the 2024 T20 World Cup squad, he didn’t feature in any matches, with Pant playing every game. Karthik acknowledged both Samson and Pant’s batting prowess, but highlighted Pant’s advantage as a left-handed batsman as a key factor in the selection. The selectors’ rationale, therefore, seems to be based on team balance and the specific strengths each player brings to the table.
