Sat Jan 25 09:16:45 UTC 2025: ## Bollywood Actress Mamta Kulkarni Becomes Mahamandaleshwar in Kinnar Akhara
**Prayagraj, India** – Former Bollywood actress Mamta Kulkarni has sparked controversy after taking sannyas (religious renunciation) and becoming a Mahamandaleshwar (a high-ranking title in Hinduism) within the Kinnar Akhara (a monastic order for transgender individuals) during the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj. She was initiated on Friday and given the new name Shriyamai Mamta Nand Giri.
Kulkarni’s appointment has drawn sharp criticism from several Mahamandaleshwars of other Akharas. Swami Anand Swarup Maharaj, the Shambhavi Peethadhishwar, strongly condemned the Kinnar Akhara’s recognition, calling it a “mahapap” (great sin) and accusing the Akhara of exploiting Kulkarni’s fame for profit. He also stated that sannyas is not traditionally an option for women.
Other Mahamandaleshwars expressed concerns about the process, emphasizing the need for thorough background checks and adherence to traditional criteria before bestowing such a high title. They highlighted the importance of character, spiritual knowledge, and a history of service to the community. While some acknowledged everyone has the right to renunciation, they questioned the speed and lack of scrutiny in Kulkarni’s appointment. One Mahamandaleshwar from the Juna Akhara noted that while their tradition allows individuals from various backgrounds to attain high positions, it doesn’t include directly appointing someone to Mahamandaleshwar without prior service and demonstrated commitment.
The Akhara Parishad president, Ravindra Puri, while offering his blessings, stressed the importance of living up to the responsibilities of a Mahamandaleshwar and cautioned against using the title merely for fame. He also stated that previous accusations against Kulkarni, which were never proven, shouldn’t be a factor in her spiritual journey.
Kulkarni, who acted in several Bollywood films in the 1990s, was involved in several controversies earlier in her career, including a topless photoshoot and accusations linking her to the underworld. She later claimed to have found spiritual fulfillment and released an autobiography titled “Autobiography of a Yogini” in 2013.
The appointment of Mamta Kulkarni as a Mahamandaleshwar within the Kinnar Akhara continues to generate significant debate regarding the criteria for religious leadership and the role of tradition in contemporary Hinduism.
